The other issue here is one of length – at about 4 hours long, this game is fairly short, and there's not much replay value here, save for those masochistic players wanting to attempt a no-death run. I can't help but feel that this is lazy design – a better game would find ways to convey this information to the player without requiring them to die first. Firstly, the game's design pretty much requires players to die repeatedly, with players frequently unable to anticipate the dangers ahead of them or determine how to counter them until after they've already died to it at least once or twice. However, there are two issues I feel this game has that keep it from true excellence. Yet, with this extremely limited move set, the game finds plenty of creative puzzle for players to solve, with many of those puzzles requiring the player to be observant of their environment and make use of everything available to them. The boy can't really do all that much – he can run left or right, jump, climb ropes and ladders, grab ledges, hit switches, and push or pull objects in the environment, and that's about it. The gameplay here is brilliant in its simplicity. Despite the game's T-rating, this game is extremely violent in a number of creatively gruesome ways, so more squeamish players may want to avoid this one.
Limbo doesn't have much in the way of music, but makes up for that with a good amount of atmospheric sound that really sells the menace of the place you're in, as well as emphasizing every horrible death your character (and others around him) has to suffer through. And while the boy's animations are a bit clunky, some of the other characters, such as a giant spider that hunts you through a good portion of the game, are quite articulate.
The world is depicted in all black and white, with black silhouettes against a white background, and despite the game's tiny file size (123MB), there's a lot going on here, visually – excellent lighting effects, atmospheric fog, particles of dust and grass blowing in the wind, and subtle differences in camera focus, along with the interesting details that litter the world itself, all help to bring this game to life. One of the most noteworthy things about Limbo is its presentation, which is absolutely gorgeous, and relayed to the player without any sort of language or interface. This game was originally released for the Xbox 360 back in 2010 and has since been ported to numerous platforms, with the Switch version of the game coming out in 2018.
Limbo is a Puzzle Platformer that has players taking the role of a young boy working his way through a nightmarish and hostile world full of a wide variety of dangers players must get past generally using little more than observation, logic, and simple physics.
